TODAY IN THE CIVIL WAR | DO YOU KNOW?
About "Today in the Civil War"
Our "Today in the Civil War" feature is in intended to provide some chronological background on the great natonal conflict. It includes events, births, and deaths related to the war. But it also includes some that provide background and context (such as July 4, 1776). In addition, some events, births, deaths that have absolutely nothing to do with the Civil War, or even the United States, have been included to remind readers of global political, scientific, artistic, and cultural developments during the same period.
We've resorted to a couple of "short cuts" in the entries.
Events that take place in that part of Virginia that later became West Virginia are indicated by "WVa" even before the new state was established, an anachronism that we hope our readers will understand is necessary to help people locate events.
Also, smaller actions that don't rise to the traditional designation of "battle" are designated by a number of different terms -- combat, engagement, raid, skirmish, action, etc. -- since it was often the case that several such occurred on the same day.
This program is in beta. That is, it needs to be "de-bugged". It is hardly complete, and has many typos, omissions, and other errors.
N&S welcomes suggestions for corrections, additions, and even links. These may be sent to anofi@aol.com with "CWToday" in the subject line.
No flame messages, though.
